Serve Others Year 'Round
We put our faith into action and discover life's true purpose by loving our neighbors as ourselves. Through our Social Action Network, Salem provides a variety of opportunities to serve others in Jesus' name.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to COVID-19, in-person service activities are limited.

Three Great Loves
At Salem, our service to others is informed by the Gospel, and guided by a mission imperative of the United Church of Christ, the Three Great Loves:
-
Love of Neighbor,
-
Love of Children, and
-
Love of Creation.
We emphasize one or more of these three faithful avenues of Christian service throughout the year.

Welcoming the Stranger
Welcoming the Stranger provides free educational opportunities for immigrants and refugees.
Classes are offered in English as a second language, computer skills, and citizenship preparation to adults, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or national origin.
How and when to help: Volunteer to help instructors and provide hospitality during classes on Tuesday nights. Learn more and volunteer.

Doylestown FISH
Doylestown FISH provides services to people in need, including food, temporary housing, help with prescriptions, rent, utility bills, a bus ticket, or any other emergency short-term need.
How and when to help: Salem members provide financial support for FISH through our Social Action giving, and members volunteer their time assisting FISH clients. Learn more and volunteer.

Care of the Environment
Salem takes seriously God's calling to be wise stewards of Creation. Members participate in Earth Day events, recycle, volunteer in the PA Dept. of Transportation Adopt-A-Highway roadside clean-up program, and educate ourselves on environmental issues.
Members engage in annual and ongoing learning and community-action events related to conservation and the environment. Contact our Social Action chair, Michael Flanagan to learn more, and join in!

Blanket Sunday
Blanket Sunday is held every spring at Salem, to support the Church World Service Blankets Project. CWS distributes thousands of blankets around the world in response to disasters, to shelters, and to community organizations helping the needy.

Bethany Children's Home
Located in Womelsdorf, PA, Bethany Children's Home is a United Church of Christ-affiliated residential center for abused and neglected youth. Bethany provides therapeutic, spiritual, and cultural services including psychological treatment, drug and alcohol services, alternative education, community service, and life-skills training.
Salem members support Bethany through our Social Action giving, including annual Christmas gifts for Bethany residents.

Stuff the Bus
In Bucks County, 16% of children struggle to have their basic needs met. For these kids, things we may consider ‘basics’ - like back to school supplies - can be hard to come by. We believe it is critically important for all kids to start the school year with the right supplies.
Stuff the Bus is an annual late-summer United Way effort to provide backpacks full of school supplies for 2,000 children.
How to help: Salem is a collection point for school supplies. Members and friends also volunteer to sort and stuff backpacks.

Our Church's Wider Mission (Salem Church Coalition)
In the United Church of Christ, we are invited to share through our offerings to Our Church's Wider Mission.
Ministries funded by OCWM include anti racism initiatives, environmental justice, immigration justice, and tools needed to keep local UCC churches strong, effective, and growing.
Salem members are invited through the year to make a gift whenever a particular OCWM special offering occurs.
