Staying Secure with Salem Gatherings on Zoom
The online meeting platform used by Salem, Zoom, recently experienced security issues.
Zoom has since added new security measures. In addition, Salem is following new guidelines to ensure the security of our meetings and participants:
Only authenticated Zoom users can join meetings. Participants must first sign into their Zoom account at zoom.us, or on their Zoom app.
After signing in, all participants will be in a “waiting room” prior to being admitted to the meeting. This practice allows the administrator to monitor participants before being admitted.
A password is required for every person wishing to join a meeting, whether by computer or by phone. This password cannot be posted online. To learn the password prior to a meeting, text 267-221-5383 with the message “password?” You will receive a reply text message containing a numeric password. This practice is an additional step ensuring only known participants are given access to the meeting.
These steps will require more time to join a meeting, so please arrive early in the waiting room – up to 15 minutes prior – and request and receive a password to join in.
Never click on a link – online or in an email - to join a Zoom meeting from someone you do not know. Instead, copy the link URL (web address), go to zoom.us and paste the URL in the box on the “Join a Meeting” page. This ensures you are joining a legitimate Zoom meeting, and not falling prey to phishing or malware.
